Compost 2011

Winter is a great time to get stuck into some compost building.

My latest heap has a variety of ingredients:
  • A base layer of chopped Asparagus fronds that had died back for the winter this is to allow plenty of air beneath the heap.
  • Shredded paper that had been bedding in the chook house so it was mixed with lots of old chooky poop
  • A bale of Certified Organic Sugar Cane Mulch
  • Cow Manure from our farmer friends
  • Nettles and Dandelions from the chook runs
  • Wattle and fruit tree leaf litter
  • Azolla from an overgrown pond!
  • Chopped Broad Bean foliage from Bed1
It is watered at each turning (if needed) with rainwater mixed with worm juice from the worm farm. Each time I brew up worm castings (see how Here) I give the heap a sprinkling too!!

  1. I remember a good piece of advice on how to manage a compost heap. It should be made like a bolognaise sauce, and not layered like a lasagne!"

  2. Interesting advice Matron...I think it's just easier to build up a heap in layers.

Once it's been turned the first time everything is mixed up anyway.

  3. That looks like a very well organised heap to me scarecrow! I was always told to encourage the men of the household to take the occasional 'wild wee' on the compost as an activator- just make sure it's well screened!

  4. Ha Freerangegirl our son (now 26) still asks where the compost heap is when he visits. Unfortunately this one isn't very "private" at all!!!
