Garlic Border
White flowered Garlic Chives Allium tuberosum and purple Society Garlic Tulbaghia violacea. When the Chives die back in winter the Society Garlic remains to mark the border edge.
In my new garden design the intention is to have the chickens run around the outside to keep out the grass. I will blog about that when I get it done. But there will be a small area of a meter or so that connects with a lawn. Does garlic make a good grass proof border?
Hi Boneygirl and Mr H You can never have too much garlic and this combination is quite pretty. :)
Hi Jason Usually a recommended border on the grass side of a veg patch is Lemongrass and Comfrey but I'm not sure how these would grow through winter where you are. They both die back with our cold winters (with heavy frosts). The little clumping society garlic does remain through winter and can grow quite densely. It might work. Otherwise it could be best to keep that edge clear and chop the grass back as it grows. I haven't had to work with grass for so long...we don't get enough rain for lawn!!
I just love those garlic chives! I grew some from seed several years ago and they come up year after year. Wonderful in potato salads, and the flowers and seed heads are lovely too! I wonder if the bees there make garlic honey?
Doc and I live in a rural township in the dry Mid North of South Australia on three town blocks giving us a total of half an acre.
We endure extremely hot and dry summers only to be greeted with frosty mornings during our increasingly dry winter months.
Despite this harsh climate we manage to grow much of our own food.
Water is scarce and many measures are taken to utilise every drop we have.
Our garden beds are shaded (during summer), heavily mulched, humus rich and most are now converted to wicking worm beds.
Your garlic is lovely. My husband loves to plant elephant garlic everywhere!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty.:)

Fabulous idea! I love seeing plants other than box used as hedges and garden borders - pretty and productive!
