In the Garden This week:
Yet more Tomatoes and the Tomatillos have been potted on and placed in the hothouse.More spring seeds have been sown.
Yes more than I'll ever use BUT
FIRST they have to germinate,
THEN the have to survive any frosts until planting,
THEN they have to survive any frosts after planting!
If too many survive at the end (they usually do) then there are friends and fellow community gardeners to share the leftovers with.
The Onions in the Dog Pen Beds have taken off with the rain we've had. That's a volunteer Coriander growing in the middle of the row!Weekly Harvest Tally:

Hi!Does Cucumber Crystal Apple grow well on trellis?Or are they very bushy type? This spring will be my first time growing them and I also bought the seeds from phoenix seeds. Cheers, Diana
ReplyDeleteHi Diana
ReplyDeleteThose cucumbers will be happy growing up a trellis. I hope they will be the best cucumbers you have ever eaten!
I saw the first snake for this season about 4 weeks ago here, on the road, in the Mt. Lofty Ranges. It was a red bellied black, I thought it was dead but it must have been sunning itself because when I returned about 10 minutes later it was gone. After a long, cold, wet winter I expect it thought that spring was here already and took the opportunity to warm up a little
ReplyDeleteNice to see all that you are seeding now. I planted out the last of our cauliflower and brocolli yesterday and was wondering what to seed now for spring! Many thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHi Olive
ReplyDeleteYes I suppose with lizards on the move it means snakes too!!! They are very hungry when they wake up from their winter sleep...it must mean spring isn't too far away. With -3C up here this morning I can't see it myself. :)
Hi Bec
ReplyDeleteDepending on just where you are in Qld your planting seasons may be different to mine.
Check out the Gardenate site for a better guide. You can choose the best climate zone for your area.
If you subscribe to it (free) they will send out an email to remind you each month!
Thank you. I might sow those seeds next weekend.
ReplyDeleteSo glad to find this site! I just moved to Adelaide from the eastern US where I gardened and raised chickens and worms. Now that I'm here I'm trying to start up a good container food garden in little space from scratch. With all the seasons being opposite it is a pleasure to find this site for information....very good work! And thank you ^.^
ReplyDeleteHi Dandilyon
ReplyDeleteWelcome to South Australia!!
Your growing times will be a bit different down in Adelaide to mine up here with our frosts!
The Gardenate chart for temperate zones should be helpful for you.
As for container gardening why not set up some Wicking Box type containers. You can use anything that will hold water in the base and as long as you allow an overflow they don't "fill up with water". That way you can use your worm keeping skills and grow your veg at the same time!!!
I like your gardens-you must have the greenest thumb ever!
ReplyDeletei was about to say "my god she sows a lot of different seeds" so thanks for the explanation - playing chicken with Mr frost.
ReplyDeleteSo does your Almond ever set fruit there or do they all get blasted by the frost?
Our Acacias are going to have a bumper year here in the center after all the rain we have had and the continuing rain we are getting - more forecast this week. I think our frosts have finished - cross fingers
I love this blog! Keep up the inspiraing work you are doing!
ReplyDeleteHi Chris
ReplyDeleteYes there are a lot of seeds this year...happens every year!
We get a great set with the Almond trees...our main problem is keeping the parrots and Galahs from eating them all! The trees are too big to net but some of the younger trees will be trained to a height to allow easy netting so we can get to eat some almonds again!!
They seem to cope with the late frosts we get here. We can have frosts until October...we even had snow on the last day of October one year!!!
Hope you are right about your frosts!
Thanks for the comment Quachy.
