Purple Veg

Scarecrow's Log: 28:06:2009:

Of winter's lifeless world each tree
Now seems a perfect part;
Yet each one holds summer's secret
Deep down within its heart.
~Charles G. Stater~

Temperatures this week:
Lowest Min 0.7C
Lowest Max 12.9C
Highest Max 16.4C
15mm Rain

What's happening in the garden?

I picked the first Violet Sicilian Cauliflower and it tastes great!

Found a survivor Purple Dragon Carrot
in the Kitchen Garden.

We are still harvesting heaps of Lemons and juicing them for cordial and frozen juice for later in the year. I put the juice into ice cubes trays and pop them out into a plastic bag when they are frozen.
The skins are dried in the old car out the back and used as fire starters in our wood heater. They are very high in volatile oils so are just the thing to use.

Propagation:
It's been too cold and wet for much propagation this week but I'm studying the seed catalogues and checking through my seed stash to sort out just what to plant in spring.

New in the Garden This week:

The Radicchio - Rossa di Treviso not really new
but quite colourful on these dreary days.

We are slowly being over run by Nettles
time to brew up some more plant teas I think!

mmmmm lovely! I have a slight obsession with odd coloured veg - especially purple which is one of my fav colours! I'm currently growing purple haze carrots - can't wait to see how they turn out - a red heirloom lettuce, blue hopi corn and red aztec corn (okay not purple but close to it.. sorta!), anyway, I really can't wait to see all the colour, how wonderful it is.

I was growing half a dozen different varieties of capsicum until just recently, for no reason other than for colour fun : ) I was rather amused when I gave a neighbour some purple capsicum, and they told their kids it was an eggplant. HAHAHA!

Anyway, as usual, your veg looks awesome and colourful!

What a beautiful cauliflower, I wish I would have grown some purple ones this year. We are growing the purple dragon carrots though, hope they are good.

Hi scarecrow, I have not heard of orange peel for the slugs but will try it,anything is worth a go to get rid of them. We do put out beer, just cheap discount stuff into old saucers or yoghurt tubs. We call them slug pubs!

Hi Rolley
I did notice all the great, unusual stuff you grow! That's the joy of growing your own veg from seed, you have such a wide choice of varieties! I hope the neighbours enjoyed the 'Eggplant' lol

Hi Mr H
The Purple Dragons are bright orange inside...the earwigs got to most of these this year so we are enjoying the few survivors while we have them!

Hi Peggy
I love that term 'Slug Pub'. They are attracted to the orange peels but you still have to get out there and squish them!

awesome... my winter garden is coming along a lot more slowly than yours.... I am really interested in using the lemon skins as firestarters can you tell me more??

Hi MLI
Your garden will get there just keep at it ;)

It's the volatile oils in the citrus skins that are flammable and so help to start the fires.
Often you'll see references to orange skins for this but these lemons are very oily and work well too.

The orange peels I tried to dry went mouldy so they went out for slug traps in the garden! :)
