What's happening in the garden?

It's raining!
Lots of growth!

The Greens Picking Corner on Bed 1
has put on amazing growth with the rain.

The Broad Beans are up and the Broccoli's growing well!

Worried that all this green growth would mean no roots on the Turnips in Bed 2, I took a sneaky peak and it looks like they are growing well. I'll start picking these at about tennis ball size so they are about half size already.

The Drumhead Cabbages are forming firm heads on Bed 3

See the latest update for the Garlic Trial Here

Propagation:

Took about 26 runners off the Strawberry Tank Bed and popped them into loose potting-on mixture in a Styrofoam box. Looks like new strawberry bed for next year. I have a couple of old tanks earmarked for this. wink

Dug up volunteer Warrigal Greens Tetragonia tetragonoides that were popping up in the Herb Spiral...I shall be keeping a look out for all sorts of volunteer seedlings now this rain has come!

The seed and cutting trials I'm monitoring for my course are all going well...some of those cuttings are showing roots already!

Hi Tracy
Erm I never actually planted any peanuts this season...I'll give them another go next year but couldn't find a suitable spot this year. Last years didn't come to anything through lack of water.

Perhaps you could cover yours to keep any frost off. Have a sneaky dig around underneath and see if they are growing yet!

That's what I've done with the water chestnuts in the bath tub and they are growing to a nice size but I'm not sure what they are going to do with these frosts on the way. I think I might find out this week.

Hi, You garden still look great. We are just beginning our garden season. And it looks like another rainy start again this year. I have only managed to get out some of the tomatoes I started. And a few potatoes. Some of my lettuce self seeded. it was a surprise. but I am working on controlling some of the rain this year. As we only got 5 tomatoes total last year.

Hi Grammy
Yes you are just starting your main season while I'm about to tuck my garden up for the winter here.
I'll have to visit your blog to enjoy your garden now!

Warmth and rain are a great combination in the veggie garden. We are having just that here, but at the other end of the season to you. Great looking cabbage!!

Riding my bike to work this mornin' in 3c confirmed to me that winter has come to Melbourne. Still, at least it brought some rain!!

Sure is Matron there's a lot of new growth in the garden!

Hey Aldrum that's a bit chilly...we had a balmy 4C in comparison! Quite a bit of fog around this week too.

How do you support your broad beans when they get taller?

Scarecrow said...

Hi Spring
I usually put a stake at each end of the bed and tie string between them, so it goes around the beans.
They tend to support themselves fairly well and the string just holds the straggly bits in.

thanks scarecrow, I'll give that a try, last year mine were all leaning to one side on top of one another, couldn't fathom how to keep them upright

cheers
