What's happening in the garden?

The first sproutings of Garlic were noticed early in the week and each planting now has at least one clove growing. Follow the Updates Here

I've updated the growth in the Main Veg Garden Wicking beds here

I've cleared the two Wicking Beds in the Dog Pen Garden and topped them up with with mushroom compost, soaked coir, sheep manure and a mixture of Fecondo, blood and bone and dolomite. A thin top layer of sandy loam and a good mulch layer of organic sugar cane mulch will go on top ready for rain this week!!!
The chances have actually increased to 90% chance of 10-20mm and more!

More Pink Violet cuttings taken

Potting up and Planting out:
Potted on
Pink Violet
Gazanias
Chrysanthemum seedlings

New in the Garden This week:
We bought some bags of lovely old Sheep Manure at the markets this week!
Doc's new little storage shed is up...including it's concrete base!

Not so welcome is the appearance of these little guys on the back Grape vines. Only 6 that were quickly dispatched (squashed). They are Vine Moth caterpillars Phalaenoides glycinae and do little damage at this time of the year when the leaves are about to fall. However, I don't want to let them breed up too much as they can cause serious damage in early Spring when the new shoots are just appearing. evil

Is that pink garlic flowers?? Matron might even be willing to grow them if they are edible. Beautiful!

Hi Matron
Yes they are edible (probably see below)! It's more of a mauve than pink. They have a slight garlicy taste and the flowers are edible too. They can be used like garlic chives and these stay green through our winter here when garlic chives die back. I have read that it will freeze in cold climates though but should come back in spring. It survives here on very little water!

There is some discussion about how safe it is to eat (see here)though but most places seem to indicate it's safe. See links below.
I guess it could make you ill if it was all you ever ate! I don't eat it much as there is usually something else around to use.

The society garlic looks like a white one that grows wild here ,it is out all along the roadsides at the moment around the countryside. The flowers can be used in salads but I must admit I have not tried them!

Hi Peggy
I've read about that one recently...just can't remember which blog it was I saw it on.

Great news Lucky!!!!
We've had 18mm since Thursday, not heaps but great for the garden!
It's getting cooler too, so I think winter is just around the corner... :)
