Spring Has Almost Sprung!

Garden Log 7 Sept 08:

Spring is nature's way of saying, "Let's party!"
~Robin Williams~

The Apricot tree is in full bloom this week.

The days are warming up; the chill has left the air!
Temperatures this week:
Lowest Min -0.6C
Lowest Max 15C
Highest Max 20.8C
No Recorded Rainfall

The Wicking Beds have been topped up with compost, the worms added and a cover of clean underfelt put on top to keep the sun off. The worm's feeding pot made up. The beds will sit now until October when the frosts should be gone for good...maybe...wink

The Atomic Red Carrots (Phoenix) are popping up
in the Main Veg Garden.
Now we have to keep them safe from the earwigs...evil

The Roi de Carouby Snow Peas are setting well
with the warmer mornings.

During the Greens Planting time this week
I've potted up Basil Genovese and Purple,
Lettuces (lots), Chinese Mustard, Rocket, Tatsoi.

As some ** plant seeds can be sown in either the Green or Fruit planting phases of Moon Planting, the following seeds were sown into punnets/cell trays or loo rolls (sunflowers):

Basil - Genovese (Green Harvest), Purple (Phoenix) and Sweet (Edens)
Freckles Lettuce (swap buddy on ALS)
Lemon Cucumber (New Gippsland)
Mexican Sour Gherkin - Melothria scabra syn. pendula (Diggers)
Giant Cucumbers (Gringo from ALS)
Canteloupe (Tully from ALS),
Rockmelon (Gringo - it will be interesting to compare these two),
Sunflowers - Giant Russian (Cornucopia) and Evening Sun (Eden),
Sweet Leaf - Sauropus androgynus (earlier swap buddy on ALS)
Purslane - Portulaca oleracea (Edens)
Red Clover - Trifolium pratense (Phoenix)
Native Lemon Grass (Local Seed Savers Network)

Some flowers from DT Brown:
Marigold Crakerjack
Cosmos Purity
Alyssum Carpet of Snow
Nasturtiums Jewel Mixed and Tall Mixed

Some of these have been brought inside to germinate others are in the hot house or shade house.

** Seeds of these plants can be grown in either Greens or Fruit planting Moon phases: Annual Flowers, Hay, Cereal Grains & Oil Seeds, Cucumbers, Melons, Leeks and Shallots.
I shall add this information to the post on Moon Planting.

A mixture of flower seeds, many home saved, were cast around the pond area of the Main Veg Garden, if they grow they will attract beneficial insects.

I'm aiming to have flowers as thick as these Calendulas and Spring Stars
all around the bases of the raised beds and the pond. idea

Links to the seed suppliers can be found in the side bar under Seeds and Plants.

Hi Northern friends sorry I've had internet problems this week...thanks for the comments.

Yes spring has certainly arrived here...seems to get earlier every year. We could still get a few frosts yet though so no planting in the garden yet!

Hey Gardening Fool how's the weather going in your part of the world?? Hope you're missing out on those horrible storms that are around!

Oh my gosh! I'v just read your last few posts and I can't get over how many different seeds you plant! Do you actually use them all?
I can't wait to keep reading your older posts, it seems like there is lots of information here for me to absorb. Keep up the good work! :D

Ha and Hi Jenni!
I do plant lot's of different seeds don't I.
That's because I'm trying to find the best varieties to grow up here in the heat. And I'm always looking for unusual things to plant too.

I joined a couple of seed swaps this year and have even more to plant than I'd intended. ooops!

I'm only going to be planting about 3-5 of each type of veg though!

Oh and I'm planting more pumpkins this week ;)

Yup...fingers crossed, storms have not come by Central Florida...but we still have a couple more months...I can't think of many years worse than 2004 when we had 4 major hurricanes in a row (in less than two months! Your garden is looking phenomenal! We'll finally be setting up the raised beds before the end of this year...we've been saving for those...plus looking forward to our many new trees fruiting next spring. YUM!

That's good to hear GF and I hope you see out the season without any nasty storms.
I like the sound of some of your fruit trees...ah to live without frosts. I'm happy with my lot though.

BTW I love your new profile photo!!!

Haha! My profile photo kinda looks like me ☺ Thanks for the well wishes...so far so good **fingers crossed** Just a tad sad because I am going on a business trip for about a week and I have to wait until I am back to set up my spanking new raised beds! So looking forward to it! I tell you what, no frost is nice...but omg I just 'took a walk' through your garden and saw all the stuff you got blooming and I am SO green with envy! I guess we'll just have to live vicariously through each other's fruiting trees. I am excited because I got new ones and we should be set by the end of this year...got sapodilla (hurricane resistant and yummy), white sapote, mango, mulberry, strawberry tree, grumichama & cherry of the rio grande...blah blah blah...We have been eating salads with the juice of our key limes and boy oh boy they are marvelous!

Sorry...writing waaaaaaaaay too much...just had some coffee hehe later my Aussie pen pal :-) Be well! ☺
