Garden Log: 10 Feb 08

Another week with no rain
and none on the seven day forecast to come.
Cool conditions though...
...very unusual for February.
Friday's min of 6.5C was a bit chilly.

Early in the week I planted out some comfrey and yarrow under the potting bench near the tap. I often manage to spill or overflow the watering cans when filling them and that along with the run-off from the bench will keep them going. I used up-turned wire hanging baskets to keep Mrs Houdini from scratching them up.

The young brassicas have been growing well BUT the cabbage moths have found them already so I have placed them in a curtained enclosure...so far it's working.

The newly germinating seeds are growing, except for one that The Black Ninja sat on!
Potted on the bigger ones and put them straight under a curtain to keep those moths off.
  • 6 Green Goliath Broccoli
  • 4 Mini Cauliflower
  • 6 Red Shiso
  • 8 Red Cabbage
  • 2 January King Cabbage
  • 4 Corn Salad
  • Celpar (Parcel)
  • Poppies
Also planted some seeds of:
  • Green Silver (beet)
  • Lucerne Sequel

Re-potted up herbs for companion planting later:
  • 4 Tansy
  • 4 Yarrow
  • 2 Roman Wormwood
  • 5 Bronze Fennel
  • 6 Canary Island Lavender

I've made up some wicking boxes and planted some early Autumn greens with companions.
Cauliflower, Kale, Broccoli with Thyme, Parsley, Egyptian Tree Onions, Lebanese Cress.
This will be the subject of an upcoming post.

We never know the worth of water till the well is dry.

I've just found your blog and love it all so far!!! 6.5C sounds a bit chilly for this time of year. I hope it rains for you soon. I'm in the Central West and we've been lucky enough to of had some great rainfall over the last couple of months. What's Lucerne Sequel??? You have me intrigued...

Hi Jodie
Yes it was a bit chilly that morning but it's heating up in true aussie summer style again now!
Great to hear you've had some rain. It's been amazing in the Eastern states!
Lucerne Sequel is a variety of lucerne from Green Harvest that I'll grow for the chooks mainly and can use it as cut mulch around the garden.

Your Mrs Houdini must have flown to my place because she and her friend got out while I was out fishing and messed up the veg garden beds and pecked off all the lettuce leaves which were looking, and tasing, so good, and dug up some new seedlings. Sometimes I wonder how they know when the worst time is to get out!

It's unreal how much rain the Eastern States have had while we've had nothing isn't it?

We're all on tank water here so some rain would be mighty nice any time. (I'm on EP in SA - been a while since I've left a comment so thought it might be worth mentioning ;) ).

LOL Kate
I don't think even Mrs Houdini could fly that far!
They always go after the best seedlings and dig up the mulch. I'm beginning to think it would be easier to fence off each individual bed. I have done this in the past but it's a real pain...

Hi Lightening
My water tank has been empty for a while now but I do have mains water. I really wouldn't want to be a farmer relying on rainfall at the moment. It's very dry up here. No rain since before Christmas.
Hope it rains soon.
