Bed 3: Silverbeet
Latin Name: Beta vulgaris cicla
Sow: Cool conditions planted year round.
Soil: They like a very fertile, well drained soil.
pH: 6.5 - 7
Spacing: 30cm apart with 30-40cm between rows.
Best planted in Spring, Summer and Autumn for harvesting through winter.
Tends to run to seed in Spring so have replacements ready for planting.
In our hot dry climate it appreciates shade and a feeding mulch.
Soak seed in warm water overnight for faster germination.
I plant extra for chook food!
Can be lightly steamed and frozen in small servings.
