Bed 3: Silverbeet

Bed 3
Silverbeet: Also called Swiss Chard
This year I have planted Green Silver Organic seeds from DT Brown Seeds planted on 24 July 07 and planted out on to Bed 3 on 18th Sept 07.

Growing requirements:
Latin Name: Beta vulgaris cicla
Family: Chenopodiacaea
Sow: Cool conditions planted year round.
Soil: They like a very fertile, well drained soil.
pH: 6.5 - 7
Spacing: 30cm apart with 30-40cm between rows.

My Notes:
Best planted in Spring, Summer and Autumn for harvesting through winter.
Tends to run to seed in Spring so have replacements ready for planting.
In our hot dry climate it appreciates shade and a feeding mulch.
Soak seed in warm water overnight for faster germination.
I plant extra for chook food!
Can be lightly steamed and frozen in small servings.

Good Companions:
Beans
Beetroot
Onion
Kohlrabi
Lavender

November Shade:
Our first heatwave for the season arrived.
We added this shade structure to the bed
to keep off the scorching sun.
